Wisconsin Works (W-2)

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development first awarded UMOS a Wisconsin Works (W-2) contract when the program began in 1997. Wisconsin Works marked the transition from an entitlement welfare program to a workforce development/pay for performance model. This model places emphasis on employment as the end goal for program participants and works to address barriers that hinder self-sufficiency and financial stability.
The W-2 program has evolved over the years, and UMOS has been one of the major program partners in Milwaukee County, having operated the program in several county regions. Today, UMOS operates in the southeast region, but serves program participants from all over the county.
W-2 services are provided through UMOS' facility located at 2701 South Chase Avenue, Suite A, also known as Milwaukee Job Center Southeast. Services include:
- Case management
- Assessment
- SSI/SSDI advocacy
- Employability planning
- Work experience
- Job readiness and employment workshops
- Education (Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, GED/HSED classes and testing)
- Short-term job skills training
- Job development
- Job search assistance and placement
- Trial jobs
- Job retention
- Support services (transportation assistance, access to child care, food pantry)
Today, the program is funded by the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families. UMOS values this partnership and works closely with state officials to make improvements to existing services, and implement new related initiatives. For more information, contact UMOS at (414) 389-6600.
