National  Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP) - WIA 167

UMOS operates the National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP), WIA-167 with an array of services to farmworkers and their families throughout Wisconsin and Missouri.

The purpose of the program is to enable people to help themselves improve their economic well being, their education, their health, and their housing so they may better realize their potential. While there are seasonal farmworkers who reside year round in Wisconsin and Missouri, most are underemployed.

UMOS works with hundreds of employers to place persons that want a more stable work situation, and collaborates with numerous schools and other educational institutions on GED, ESL and other educational and training efforts.

UMOS assisted workers find employment as customer service representatives, truck drivers, production workers, paper goods machine setters, operators and tenders, production inspectors, testers, graders, sorters and samplers, welders, cutters and welder fitters, nursing aides, dental assistants, bus and truck mechanics, as well as diesel engine specialists. Average wages were $9.36 per hour.

Crops harvested by migrants in Wisconsin include apples, cabbage, carrots, cherries, Christmas trees, corn, cucumbers, onions, peppers,

potatoes, beans, peas, pickles, strawberries, Christmas trees, horseradish, lima beans, mint, celery, cabbage, raspberries and tobacco. Migrants in Wisconsin also work in dairy farming, mink farming, pig farming and cattle farming.

Farmworkers and their families frequently need help to cover basic necessities and other living demands such as food, gas, shelter, health care, child care, and transportation to maintain their families during the interim periods prior to being hired, during work delays or between seasonal farmwork jobs. One hundred four families in Wisconsin were assisted with Community Crisis Relief funding to aid in the purchase of food, gas, lodging, car repairs and other emergency services. In 2007 UMOS served 373 migrant and seasonal farmworkers in Missouri and Wisconsin.
