UMOS Cinco de Mayo Springfest!

Cinco de Mayo Springfest

Cinco de Mayo (the fifth of May) is an important date in Mexican history. On May 5, 1862, in the village of Puebla, the villagers and the Mexican army, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated the French army. During this time the French army was considered one of the best in the world.

The Battle of Puebla was fought between the hills of Cerro de Loreto and Cerro de Guadalupe. Many lives were lost, but against great odds Mexico was the victor. Cinco de Mayo is significant to Mexicans because villagers of every ethnic group and class of Puebla unified to preserve the freedom that they had won fifty years earlier.

Cinco de Mayo should not be confused with September 16th the official Mexican Independence Day. On September 16, 1810 Mexico gained sovereignty from Spain.

Cinco de Mayo celebrates and honors the values of freedom, loyalty, and courage. It celebrates the heroes and heroines of everyday life. Cinco de Mayo is a symbol for community spirit and a time to celebrate shared values.
