Brides Walk against Domestic Violence Annual Community Organizing Program
The Brides Walk calls attention to domestic violence in the Latino community.
It engages victims of violence proactively and promotes action against domestic
violence, and broadens support and visibility of the work of the UMOS Latina
Resource Center.
The Planning Committee consists of members of the Latino community, domestic
violence organizations, congressional staff members, local elected officials,
victims of domestic violence and members of the Center's Advisory Committee.
The Brides Walk is a dynamic event, boldly sending a message that the violence
must stop and provides women victims a chance to participate in a way that, for
the first time ever, they can publicly express their feelings, become actively
engaged and share in a powerful experience. Their participation initially may
come in the form of helping to make "wedding favors" that contain safety plans
that are distributed along the walk route, making veils that the "brides" will
wear on the day of the walk, as well as collecting pledges.
