Adult Basic Education - Overview
UMOS provides several services under the umbrella of Adult Basic Education, including literacy and basic skills classes, GED/HSED test preparation, and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes (also in Spanish). UMOS education staff members are able to provide needed instruction in both one-on-one and group settings.
Literacy and Basic Skills
Because many employment positions require a minimum reading or math skill level, UMOS instructors work with adult students to increase their reading and math skills. Using a number of resources, including technology-based instruction tools, students are able to work at their own pace yet receive teaching assistance when necessary to improve their basic education test scores.
GED/HSED Test Preparation
UMOS is one of only three community-based organizations certified as a GED/HSED Testing Center in Milwaukee. It also helps students prepare to take their GED/HSED tests by providing hands-on instruction. Through its partnership with the Milwaukee Area Technical College, UMOS is able to offer instruction in Spanish also. Classes are held during the day and also in the evening to accommodate working individuals.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
UMOS serves many students whose first language in not English. Again, through its partnerships, the agency is able to offer ESL classes to those who wish to improve their English language skills. Classes are held during the day and evening during the regular academic school year.
